dipolar coupling

in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy
synonym: magnetic dipole–dipole interaction in NMR
https://doi.org/10.1351/goldbook.08330
Direct though-space interactions of nuclear magnetic moment vectors proportional to the inverse cube of internuclear distance.
Note:
In isotropic solution, dipolar couplings average to zero as a result of diffusion but are present in solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and their effect on nuclear spin relaxation are measurable through nuclear Overhauser effects (NOEs).
