Term indicating control of a certain kinetic feature of a radical polymerization or structural aspect of the polymer molecules formed by radical polymerization, or both.
Notes:
- The adjective 'controlled' should not be used without specifying the particular kinetic or structural feature that is subject to control.
- The expression 'controlled radical polymerization' is sometimes used as a synonym for reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP), e.g., atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), aminoxyl-mediated radical polymerization (AMRP), or reversible-addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization. This is acceptable subject to the proviso stated in Note 1.
- The term diffusion-controlled radical polymerization is sometimes used to indicate that the rate of termination is determined by the rate of diffusion of the active sites.
