Contrast in a surface map or image arising from the topography of the sample surface.
Notes:
  1. Topographic effects can modify the interaction between the primary beam and the sample, making the interpretation of electron or ion yield data more complex than otherwise.
  2. Topographic contrast can change after ion sputtering.
