Plasmon excited as an electron travels through a condensed medium.
Note: The probability describing the number of extrinsic plasmons excited by the electron depends on the path length traversed and, for typical applications of Auger-electron spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of a homogeneous sample, follows a Poisson distribution for the parameter , where is path length and is electron inelastic mean free path.
