A term used mainly in liquid chromatography. It compares the mobile phase velocity with the velocity of diffusion into the pores of the particles (the so-called diffusion velocity,

In open-tubular chromatography:

ν = \frac{\overset{―}{u} d_{c}}{D_{M}}
