infrared radiation

synonym: infrared
initialism: IR

Electromagnetic radiation of wavelength between approximately 780 nm and 1000 μm or of wavenumber between approximately 13000 cm1 and 10 cm1.
Notes:
  1. The infrared range is sub-divided into three regions: near-infrared: 780 nm to 2.5 μm (12800 cm1 to 400 cm1); mid-infrared: 2.5 μm to 25 μm (4000 cm1 to 400 cm1) and far infrared: 25 μm to 1000 μm (400 cm1 to 10 cm1).
  2. The wavelength regions given are commonly used in chemistry and relate to working ranges of infrared spectrometers. Note that in other disciplines (e.g., astronomy) the terms are defined for different ranges.
  3. If there is no ambiguity the term 'infrared' is used for the mid-infrared region.
